Whats the Advantage of a Vinyl Pergola

These Pergola’s are made from high-grade polymers to form the white vinyl frame with steel or aluminum re-enforced inner structures.  The vinyl material will need very little care, a wash off with water from a garden hose.  The vinyl will not mildew, rot, rust, yellow, crack, warp and resist damage from insects.  It has a  warranty for 20 years from the manufacturer.

Portland Pergola

The Portland Pergola is the smaller of the two. If you have a small space that is about 8 foot square this pergola will fit nicely.  This pergola does not have a kit to cover the top to keep it from sailing in high wind or the extra weight of snow belt homeowners.  Be careful with hanging baskets from the cross beams, as the top is only rated to hold up 50 pounds. Customers have stated that it has withstood winds over 60 miles per hour when mounted correctly.

Assembly will require at least two people because of the overhead work you will also have to have at least one ladder.  Other tools that are needed are cordless drill driver, level, drill bits and a measuring tape.  You will have to start with a level surface or make adjustments to the length of the legs.  Check mounting instructions below to see what will work for your installation.

The pergola will arrive in three box’s that will weigh about 165 pounds total.  It will measure 7 foot square and 83 inches tall on the inside. The outside measures 7 foot 6 inches square and 93 inches tall.

Mounting options for your Pergola

There are at least two major mounting options for your Pergola.  If you are mounting the Pergola on a concrete or other solid surface, use mounting brackets sold separately.  If you are mounting your Pergola on a grass or dirt area you can use pressure treated 4 X 4 post.  Let us look at these two options.  The more solid your foundation is the more solid your finished product will be.  Don’t let your wife come out after it is up and pull over your Pergola with a basket of flowers.

Buried 4 X 4 post

In this method you stake out where your 4 X 4 post, that will need to be 10 foot long, will be to dig down at least 3 feet.  You will need at least one bag of concrete for each post. Use cross measurements to make sure that the Pergola will be square.  Use a level to get the post perfectly upright, use some spare wood as a prop to make sure it does not move during the setup. and pore your bag concrete around the post.  Wet the concrete with water and wait for it to set.  If you have measured correctly everything will be alright.

4 X 4 post with brackets for concrete surface or wood deck

Your kit will contain 4 galvanized steel brackets, 5/32 concrete drill bit, driver bit and 28-1/4 by 2 3/4 inch concrete screws.  On a solid surface, such as concrete slab or a wooden deck, you would measure where your post would be and use chalk or another method to mark your spots. Mark the three spots for the mounting screws.

Use your level at this point to make sure the brackets are level.  You may have to use some galvanized washers to level the brackets as most concrete pads have a slope for drainage.  If you do not get the brackets level at this point your Pergola may lean in the direction of the slope.

Drill your mounting holes, mount brackets with included concrete screws.  If you are mounting to a wooden deck use the screws that were used to attach the deck boards. At this time you will need to attach a 4 X 4 treated post to the bracket for your vinyl post to slide over. Read the directions of each Pergola as the length of the post could be different.
