Hanging wood porch swing

For a more traditional look, a hanging wood porch swing is one of the things that will make your outside space go back in years.  You will need to have great support in the ceiling of your porch to hang one of these swings.  In this article we will look at three different wood materials, each will have some advantages in the outdoor environment.

All of these wood swings and accessories are available from PlowHearth.com.

Now lets look at some of the details of each swing and see what will look and work best for you.

Natural stain slatted wood porch swingSlatted Wood Painted Porch Swing

Price when article was written: $249.95 plus $20 extra for shipping

Available in three colors black, natural stain (shown) and bright white.

The eucalyptus wood in this swing is much like teak, see more information I wrote on this type of wooden furniture here.  It is a very hard wood that will repeal most insects and will not rot.  Having a painted finish will add to its durability.

The front chain attaches at the arm by the support, the back attaches to the seat.

The swing is 54.25 inches wide, 24.5 inches deep and 23.5 inches tall.  Mounting chain is included.  Some assembly required.

Having three colors to choose from will make this style fit many decors.  The painted surface should last the lifetime of the swing unless someone damages it.

Cedar wood porch swingWestern Red Cedar Porch Swing

Price when article was written: $399.95 for the 4 foot swing and $499.95 plus extra $20 shipping fee for 5 foot swing.

The western red cedar wood used in this swing should be sealed to make it last longer outside. A more rounded front edge to the seat will let your legs hang with comfort.

Front chain goes through the arm to the seat base, back chain attaches to the base of the arm.

The 4 foot swing is 45 inches wide, 18 inches deep and 20 inches tall.  The 5 foot swing is 55 inches wide, 18 inches deep and 20 inches tall.  Mounting chain is included.  Some assembly required.

You can stain to your favorite color or just let this swing age to a gray color.

White Oak hanging porch swingAppalachian White Oak Porch Swing

Price when article was written: $599.95 for the 4 foot swing and 649.95 for the 5 foot swing

This swing is hand made in the USA.  Mortise and tenon joints will give this swing extra strength.  The white oak material will be very durable in outdoor conditions and is decay resistant. The hand oil rubbed finish will give this swing the finish of fine furniture.

The front roll of the seat will give the back of your legs a little more comfort for long term sitting.  The front chain attaches to the base of the arm without going through it.  The back chain attaches to the base of the arm in the back.

The 4 foot swing is 48 inches wide, 26 inches deep and 24 inches tall.  The 5 foot swing is 60 inches wide, 26 inches deep and 24 inches tall.  Some assembly required.

Finish must be redone when it starts to fade or the wood will start to change color.

These swings will require very little care.  A quick rinse with the hose and wipe down any stubborn spot with a rag with a mild detergent.  Do not bleach or use any harsh chemicals, it will kill any finish on your swing.

Several items are available to give you a better feel and look to your swing.  A set of mounting springs will let your swing have a less solid feel.  See my information here on a set of weather resistant springs for porch swings.

Having cushions for long term sitting will give you more style and the ability to change the color decor without spending a great deal of money.  Look at some of my bench cushions here.

Conclusion, my thoughts

Getting a hanging wood porch swing for sitting and relaxing in the outside while under cover is a great addition to any home.  I have given you three examples in three different wood sources.  Each will have a different finish and care for the finish.

Make sure that your mounting hardware will properly support your swing.  The hooks or other materials you use will have to support the swing and all of its contents while they are in motion.  Without the proper mounting your swing may end up on the floor of your porch when you are in it.

I hope that you have gotten some ideas for a wooden front porch swing.  If you think that you may like the look of a resin wicker swing, look at my information here.
